<h4><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary)">Matt has delivered real results on some of the biggest challenges facing San Francisco with determined, innovative leadership.</span></h4><p>Before joining the Assembly, Haney served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing District 6 which includes San Francisco’s downtown neighborhoods, he led efforts to build over 5,000 units of new housing, expand tenant protections, improve mental health services, create more affordable housing, and support workers and small businesses.</p><p>Haney began his public service on the San Francisco Board of Education, where he was twice elected citywide. As School Board President, he worked to expand access to technology, support educators, and strengthen services for students with disabilities and those experiencing homelessness. Haney was the only candidate for any office in San Francisco and only incumbent school board member in the country ever to be endorsed by former President Barack Obama.</p>

<h2>An effective, progressive leader with a proven track record</h2><h4><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary)"><strong style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary)">Assemblymember Matt Haney proudly represents California’s 17th Assembly District encompassing the eastern side of San Francisco.</strong></span></h4><p>Haney serves as Chair of the Committee on Housing and Community Development and Chair of the Legislative Renters’ Caucus, where he is one of the few renters in the Legislature. He also chairs the Committee on Downtown Recovery and serves on the Committees on Natural Resources, Public Safety, Business and Professions, and Budget Subcommittee 5 on State Administration. He also serves as Chair of the California Legislative Irish Caucus, and Chair of the Select Committee on Fentanyl, Opioid Addiction, and Overdose Prevention. Previously, he held leadership roles as Assistant Majority Whip, and Assistant Majority Leader for Policy and Research.</p><p>In the Assembly, Haney has prioritized expanding access to housing, creating high paying jobs and supporting small businesses, ensuring greater access to health care, confronting the fentanyl and opioid crisis, and supporting the economic recovery of California’s downtowns. He has championed legislation to accelerate housing construction and enforcement, improve workplace safety and fairness, expand access to lifesaving addiction treatment, and strengthen California’s cultural and economic hubs so that urban cores can rebound from the pandemic.</p>

Varias de estas propuestas de ley luchaban por abordar la toxicomanía y la crisis de opiáceos. El Asambleísta Haney escribió legislación que permite que las farmacias móviles dispensen medicamento para tratar la adicción a los opiáceos. <h2>Climate Change</h2>

<p><strong>Matt’s Results for San Francisco:</strong></p><ul><li><p>Led the effort to house over 2,400 homeless in Shelter-In-Place (SIP) hotel rooms during the pandemic.</p></li><li><p>Invested over $1 billion in supportive housing, housing vouchers, and housing for people experiencing homelessness as Budget and Finance Chair.</p></li><li><p>Guaranteed mental health care for every San Franciscan with Mental Health SF co-authored with Supervisor Ronen, so that those with a mental illness or substance use disorder can get treatment and care.</p></li><li><p>Advocated for navigation centers in all 11 supervisorial districts, opened a new navigation center on the Embarcadero and multiple other new shelters, treatment facilities and navigation centers in his district.</p></li><li><p>Authored a law and secured funding to expand 24-hour bathrooms from zero in 2017 to over 25 locations, all across the city, because everyone deserves the dignity of a private, clean, safe place to go.</p></li></ul><p><br><strong>Matt’s Commitments in the Assembly</strong>:</p><ul><li><p>Address the root causes of homelessness by investing in mental health services, transitional housing, and wrap-around services such as job training and health care.</p></li><li><p>Empower the State of California to hold other cities and counties accountable for creating more housing and services for the homeless, so the responsibility doesn’t fall on San Francisco alone.</p></li><li><p>Pass a wealth tax on billionaires to fund investments in supportive housing and navigation centers.</p></li><li><p>Establish a state system of rapid rehousing vouchers and emergency rental assistance to keep people housed and off the streets.</p></li><li><p>Ensure every tenant has the right to an attorney in an eviction proceeding.</p></li><li><p>Invest additional funds to purchase hotels to rapidly provide new housing for homeless residents without sky-high building costs.</p></li></ul>

<p>SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Tonight Supervisor Matt Haney declared victory in the special election to represent California’s 17th Assembly district. As of 10:30 p.m., Haney had earned over 63% of the vote, an outright victory with nearly 62,000 votes counted so far. The mood at Haney’s election night party, held at Victory Hall &amp; Parlor, was celebratory as campaign staff, volunteers, supporters, and friends enjoyed live music and congratulated the future Assembly member.&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Matt Haney released the following statement:</strong> \n</p>
<p><em>“From day one, this campaign was about building a San Francisco that was more inclusive, affordable, sustainable, and welcoming for all. We united a broad coalition of leaders, organizations, and individuals who shared our vision. We focused on the issues and we made promises to deliver real solutions to San Francisco’s challenges. Now I’m ready to go to Sacramento to deliver on those promises.</em></p>
